1 in 5 of us will be affected by disability in our lifetimes, yet disabled people remain one of society’s most marginalised groups. Barriers can affect every part of disabled individuals’ lives – they are as widespread as they are detrimental – and prevent many disabled people from leading what most would consider a normal life.

For almost 80 years Leonard Cheshire has challenged this, removing barriers people face to open the doors to opportunity, choice, and support in communities across the UK. Each year we make a positive impression in the lives of thousands of individuals, creating real difference.

Our social care services are situated at the heart of communities nationwide, and improve the quality of life of disabled residents. Our programmes support people to reach their potential and remove barriers they face. Our advocacy work amplifies disabled people’s voices and brings about legislative change.

Charity funding

Grant-giving organisations have always been a key way we fund our work and achieve our goals. So much of our work is not covered by the statutory funding we receive as a charity to run our social care services. Without the generous support of trusts and foundations, we would be unable to make the difference we do in the lives of the thousands of disabled people we support each year.

Recent supporters

We have developed longstanding and broad relationships with many charitable trusts and foundations across the UK. From small family trusts to larger grant-giving organisations, statutory funders, and corporate foundations, we form partnerships that provide flexibility and reliability, and that deliver impact – together, we make disabled people’s lives better.

Trust and foundation partners have recently supported many aspects of our work. These include:

  • The Denise Coates FoundationSamuel and Freda Parkinson Charitable Trust, and Wyn and Ken Lo Memorial Foundation generously supporting our Assistive Technology Programme roll-out across parts of the country. This project is revolutionising disabled individuals’ ability to communicate, and in turn, their independence and autonomy.
  • The National Lottery Community Fund enabling disabled people in Wales to develop their campaigning and advocacy skills as part of our My Voice My Choice project, so that they are better able to make their voices heard and create change in their communities.
  • Hospital Saturday Fund Charitable Trust funding a range of projects that have improved the health and wellbeing of the disabled individuals we support.
  • Sport England supporting the residents of Leonard Cheshire’s care services to lead more active lives through our All Active Together project.
  • Our partnership with the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation that supports disabled entrepreneurs by recognising their achievements through The Stelios Awards.

How you can help

We are immensely proud of our relationships with our supporters and work they enable – we would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to all the trusts and foundations that have supported and continue to support our work.

We remain steadfast in our ambition to support disabled people to lead richer, more independent, whatever these may look like. You can help us achieve our ambition, and there are certain areas of our mission that might align with your funding priorities.
